devotion [Jan. 15th, 2009|10:47 am]
So one of my neighbors put up a giant logo for the Washington Capitals hockey team in his front yard. It's handmade and must be like 15 feet wide. It also lights up at night with twinkly lights. Despite the fact that it's a monstrosity, it makes me a little jealous. Clearly this guy is really intense about the team. I'd like to be that intense about something. I can't think of a single thing that I like that I'm willing to build a giant 15-foot plywood light-up sign for. Even if I owned the Capitals I don't think my devotion would be that intense. And here's a dude with no particular reason for liking the team, but was nevertheless moved to expose himself to public ridicule with such a tacky display of loyalty. On the other hand, my emotional response to most things is "...meh." I don't seem to experience the same emotional highs that some other people do, and I'm a bit jealous about that. I keep thinking that somewhere out there is something so awesome that once I find it, I'll construct a 15-foot sign honoring it, but frankly, I've been around for a long time now and I haven't found it yet.

Speaking of devotion, I got a ticket for the Metro (subway) today and it had a photo of Obama on it and the words, "Collectable Inaugural Edition Ticket." Now I'm as happy as the next guy that Obama is taking office next week, but I don't think I need to collectable subway tickets to commemorate the occasion. Seems like this 'Obama-fever' is getting out of control. I'll be glad when it's over and the tourists go home.
