Ok, so time to update on the job situation. If you remember, I spent most of the fall complaining about the fact that none of the law firms wanted to hire me as a summer intern. While that is still true, it does seem that I have become a master of getting jobs that don't actually pay anything. First, I have an offer from Earthjustice to do a summer internship. They are a non-profit law firm that works on behalf of environmental groups, so that's pretty exciting. Even more interesting is that the job is up in Juneau, Alaska. That would certainly be an adventure, don't you think? Second, I got an offer to work for the World Organization for Human Rights. They are a non-profit that works on behalf of detainees, and is actively trying to get the people responsible for authorizing torture indicted. That would be pretty cool too. I was able to parlay that offer into a spring semester internship, so I can fit them both in. Finally, I also received an offer to do an unpaid summer internship for the Department of Justice's Environmental and Natural Resource Division. Those are the guys that sue polluters for the federal government. That would also be pretty cool. I am hoping to be able to parlay that offer into a fall internship. That way I could do all three and get to spend the summer in Alaska. I think that one of the factors that caused the law firms to balk at the idea of hiring me was the fact that I had zero experience doing legal stuff. Maybe if I have three (relatively prestigious) internships on my resume, I'll have a better chance next year?
In other news, it turns out that they did run my photo in the USA Today the other day, in an article called "District of Cool: Have a hip time in Washington." It's not really all that impressive, because the article isn't about me, I'm really just a prop. But since USA Today has a circulation of 2.25 million, there are 2.25 million photos of me in existence right now. That's probably more copies of my face than will ever be made for the rest of my life. The fact that those 2.25 million copies of my face are connected to an article with the words 'hip' and 'cool' in the title is also a nice bonus. |
