When I used to drive to work in the suburbs, the only time I'd ever see anyone reading books was at the airport. It was very discouraging to notice what drek the average airport patron reads. But now I take the subway into the city every day, and I have to say I'm much more encouraged by the books I see people reading on their way to work. Just this week I saw one guy reading '100 Years of Solitude', and another guy reading 'Gravity's Rainbow', and a woman reading 'Beloved'. It might be nice if I actually personally knew people like that, but even just seeing that there are people out there who aren't reading Harry Potter and Tom Clancy makes me feel better about life. On the other hand, I was glancing over some old woman's shoulder today on the metro and she was reading a filthy romance novel, so maybe I'm overstating my case.

In related news I was on the elevator yesterday and there was this old man in a suit standing next to me and I could hear that he was listening to Korn on his ipod. Doesn't he realize it's 2009, not 1999? Get with the program old guy, the band you should be listening to right now is Gregory and the Hawk.
