I don't know much about economics, so I don't really have an opinion on whether this economic stimulus is going to be effective, but I am encouraged to hear that a good chunk of the money is going to the biggest renewable energy package in history. Not only is that great for the environment, which makes me encouraged about the future of humanity, but I'm also hoping that all that money creates a lot of business opportunities for the environmental industry this year. And more business means more lawyers! With my background and multiple environmental law internships under my belt, maybe I'll actually be able to get a job this fall? I don't think that the legal industry is going to be hiring many people this fall in general, but maybe environmental law will be 'hot'? Hopefully they won't blow all that money on clean coal and biodiesel, since those don't actually work.
Something that makes me less encouraged about the future of humanity is the fact that I gave a copy of Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro to my Mom for Xmas. She reads a lot and I thought that was the best book I've read in a long time. My mom generally reads complete dreck, but I thought she might like it. I talked to her the other day and she sheepishly admitted that she thought it was awful. She said that Twilight was a much better book. sigh. |
