stimulus [Feb. 26th, 2009|07:39 am]
I found out that Doug Feith (this prick) is giving a guest lecture for my arms control class next month. Will I be able to make it through the entire class without calling him a war criminal at least once? It's gonna be hard....

Also, I don't really think that the GOP knows what a 'stimulus package' means. I saw McCain on the news the other day saying about how it was a huge waste of money to spend $400 million on a new helicopter for the President. But wasting money is what the stimulus is designed to do! The interviewer made a great point when he asked McCain what about the 1000+ people that would get jobs building the helicopter. McCain said he thought they'd rather have a tax cut. No Mr. McCain, only rich people like you want a tax cut. People who build helicopters want jobs. You see the idea is that the gov't spends a lot of money on a helicopter. The helicopter company builds a new factory and upgrades their equipment so they can build other helicopters cheaper and better, and a lot of workers get some experience building helicopters so they can get even better jobs as senior helicopter builders. That is the whole point of the stimulus! I think $400 million is a ridiculous amount of money to spend for a helicopter, but McCain's logic is flawed. You can probably make an economic argument that we shouldn't have a stimulus, but it makes no sense to say that you want a stimulus, just one that doesn't "waste" money.

And then there's that Jindal guy who gave a speech yesterday using the failure of the government's response to Katrina as an example of why government doesn't work. So let me see if I can follow Jindal's logic.... Republicans underfunded FEMA and put morons in charge of it. When disaster happened, FEMA was unable to respond. Therefore, what the voters should do is elect more republicans because they won't "waste"' money on funding FEMA since it's proven to be useless in an emergency. But Mr. Jindal, wouldn't a better argument be that we should elect democrats who will put competent people in charge of FEMA and actually fund it properly? Wouldn't that be a better solution? Is Jindal seriously arguing that since the republicans screwed up FEMA so badly that we should vote for them so they can get rid of the now dysfunctional agency? And who does he want to replace FEMA? Should we hire private contractors like Blackwater? Yeah, that's gonna end well.
