moonmen [May. 20th, 2009|09:22 am]
I saw the new Star Trek movie this weekend. The interesting thing about sci-fi is that, unlike almost any other genre, as we move into the future and learn more about the universe, the genre shrinks. For example, the way spaceships travel in Star Trek is totally different from how they travel in Battlestar Galactica or Dune or Star Wars. For now its ok that they are all different because we don't really know how spaceships are going to move in the future. But once we figure that out, there will be only one way to write the story that doesn't seem silly. Years ago, most sci-fi was about moonmen and monsters from Mars. But now we've been to those places and know what they're like, so talking about moonmen and martians seems quaint. Someday we'll meet some real aliens and after that our kids won't be able to see movies with Vulcans or Jedi or Cylons without thinking they are ridiculous. On the other hand, maybe I'm being overdramatic. The Star Trek movie seems to be a hit even though, as far I know, there are no giant canyons in Iowa to drive cars into.

I came to a revelation about my personality and how this relates to the type of persons that I traditionally become friends with. It was quite interesting. For discretion's sake I'm not going to say what that revelation is, but I'm going to have to test out my theory next time I meet some new people.

BTW, on the off-chance you are one of those people who for some reason wants one of those prints of my comic, you should order it soon. After May 30th I won't be around to ship them out until August.
